The Helme Tobacco Company was founded in 1880 by George W. Helme, a former Major-General in the Confederate Army, in Helmetta, New Jersey. Originally specializing in snuff and chewing tobacco, it was reputed to be the world's largest snuff-maker by 1925.

In 1983, Helme bought the General Cigar and Tobacco Company, which were the owners of the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company, who in turn owned the Christian Peper Tobacco Company. In 1986, Helme themselves were bought out by Swisher International, who are still in business today.
